Advice & Advocacy

From advising on the correct tax treatment of a transaction to drafting Notices of Appeal disputing tax and penalty assessments, representing clients in tax appeals and negotiating settlements, Northgate Tax Chambers is able to assist with all contentious and non-contentious tax problems.

Advice may be sought via a written opinion and/or during a conference with the client. Should there be a dispute between HMRC and a taxpayer, Charlotte has significant experience in managing and litigating tax appeals and can provide strategic, technical and procedural assistance from the moment an assessment or decision is received through to the final appeal hearing or settlement negotiations.

Litigation

Due to Charlotte’s in-house experience, she is one of the few tax barristers authorised to conduct litigation. This means that she is able to provide additional support to professional and lay clients throughout the litigation process that was traditionally reserved for solicitors, such as issuing proceedings, instructing expert witnesses and engaging in correspondence with the court and other parties. Details of this can be found here.

She is therefore able to work collaboratively with clients throughout the litigation process, removing the administrative burdens and the pressures of litigation, ensuring proper case management, progression and adherence to deadlines. This is particularly useful for clients unfamiliar with the litigation process and for professional clients who may not have the resources to provide a tax litigation service to their clients.

When providing litigation services, Charlotte is a team player who integrates fully within the firm or business instructing her.

Negotiations & Settlement

Litigation is not always suitable or desirable, and Charlotte also has experience of advising on and negotiating settlement agreements, as well as representing taxpayers in the formal ADR process with HMRC.
