Self-employed barristers are required to comply with the Data Protection Act 2018/GDPR (“UKGDPR”) as well as the BSB Handbook which explains that we must take reasonable steps to ensure that our practice is efficiently and properly administered having regard to the nature of our practice and proper records of our practice are kept.

Charlotte Brown is registered as a UK Data Controller with the Information Commissioner’s Office (‘ICO’) and her registration number is ZA175466.

On 31 January 2020 the UK ceased to be an EU Member state and was in the ‘implementation period’ until 31 December 2020, during which time the UK was subject to EU data protection legislation pursuant to the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement. This included the GDPR. When the implementation period concluded the GDPR was incorporated into the UK’s domestic law as the ‘UK GDPR’ which resulted in the preservation of the EU GDPR standards within UK domestic law.
